Most dashboards answer the wrong question

A dashboard full of charts feels like control. Most of the time it’s tracking what’s easy to measure — page views, impressions, opens — instead of what the business actually decides on.

The right KPI isn’t the one with the cleanest data source. It’s the number that, if it moved, would change what someone does next week. If a metric could double or halve and nobody’s plan would change, it’s decoration on a dashboard, not a KPI.

Before adding another chart, ask what decision it’s supposed to inform. If there isn’t one, delete it.
