Most “brand work” stops at the moodboard: a palette, a font pairing, a tone-of-voice slide nobody rereads after kickoff. Then the first hard quarter hits — a pricing change, a bad review, a competitor undercutting the pitch — and the moodboard has nothing to say about any of it.
A brand that survives contact with reality is a system, not a vibe: a clear claim about who you’re for and who you’re not, decision rules for pricing and tone under pressure, and a small number of non-negotiables everyone in the company can repeat without the deck open.
That’s the difference between decoration and infrastructure. Decoration looks good in the pitch. Infrastructure is still standing in month fourteen.
